If we have the evangelists planting churches and pastors teaching, one of the things that needs to dawn on all of us is that it’s not enough.
After I Corinthians 12:28 the scripture says, miracles, then gifts of healings, then helps, then administrations, and various kinds of tongues. If we back up to verses 8-10 it says, “To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.”
God Calls All of Us to Serve
And that is the work of the church, and that involves who? EVERYONE!
As I see that beginning to move among us, as these gifts begin to flow and manifest themselves, I want to get away from the word “gifts.” I’d like to just call them manifestations of the spirit for a better picture of it. When we see that in the Body of Christ, we know there’s life and I need to feel a pulse.
I believe God is in the business of raising up leaders for His church. I believe that when He calls people to specific offices, that call is specific. I believe that the call is direct. I believe if He’s calling someone to something he’ll put a burden on them that can’t be ignored.
By the way, I think a church needs to be the soil in which the evangelists and pastors are grown. I would like to think that we’re in the business of growing our own.
God is calling different people to different kinds of things. The whole glory of this issue of the gifts is that God wants to manifest Himself through us. Whatever God is calling us to do, the point is He’s calling every one of us to serve. We may be fearful, we may feel inadequate and say, “I can’t do it! Who am I?”
God’s Response to Moses
I think specifically of the call of God on Moses at the burning bush. What I love is God’s response to Moses when Moses told Him, “I’m a nobody – I can’t do it!” God agreed with him 😊 I love it! He might have said something like, “I agree with you Moses, you are nothing and you are inadequate, but see Moses, what you need to catch is something that sometimes people don’t see as we consider manifestations (gifts) of the spirit, and that is this – I don’t need you – I want to use you, but the one who’s going to manifest Himself in power is me. When you go into Pharaoh’s court, you bring your inadequacy if you want to, you struggle with that. But what I want you to do is not go in your power anyway, I want you to go in there and say, “I Am” has sent me. Go in the power of God. Moses, you are inadequate, but I’m not.
Do What You Do
Do what you do in the power of God. If God has called you to do something, regardless of how you feel about it, do it and the power of God will manifest through you.
Whenever I start a new ministry I’m usually scared to death. I can’t even tell you how inadequate I feel. I usually have the same conversation with God that Moses did – “No, not me…” – but God very clearly calls, and we go. My fears are always completely unfounded because I don’t have to do it, God continues to – what a relief!
Do what you do in the power of God!
