Pastor Shawn and Debbie Van De MarkI’m excited to be exposed to new sources of God’s love and provision as I settle into this new role, new church, new city, new state, and new Alliance district.

From time to time we'll be highlighting members of our CPD family to get to know them better. The questions and answers below are from an interview with Pastor Shawn Van De Mark at Trinity Alliance Church in Redding, California.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m just a Washingtonian who loves the sun. I grew up in Northwest Washington State and developed an allergy to rain. I married the first woman I met in college and was gifted with 3 amazing kids. I worked in a grocery store for 17 years, 15 years longer than I thought I would. I worked as a youth pastor for 20 years, 15 years less than I thought I would.

In August of 2017 I became the lead pastor of Trinity Alliance Church (TAC) in Redding, California, and every day I’m amazed at the beauty of this congregation.

My wife Debbie is amazingly crafty, loves kids of all ages and is currently in school to get a degree in education. Our three kids still live in Washington State. Our son, Shawn Jr. works in an auto body shop in Richland. Our oldest daughter, Rose married an Army man named Isaiah in June, and she is an accountant for the state. Our youngest, Olivia, is in her third year at Central Washington University working on a psychology degree. God has richly blessed our family. Debbie and I seek to give thanks every day through showing love to all those who cross our paths.

What drew you into full-time ministry?

In high school, God placed a passion for Him and for his people deep in my soul. I have had the privilege of joining Him in caring for them ever since.

What are you most passionate about in your ministry?

I’m most passionate about knowing and enjoying the intimate love relationship I have with God and helping others to do the same.

Tell us a little about the church you’re in or the ministry you’re involved with.

TAC is a spiritually mature congregation that is familiar with suffering. Both individually and corporately, we have gone through many difficult and tragic times. God has used these tragedies to draw our congregation to Himself. Unlike many who become bitter or withdraw from relationships because of pain, our church has embraced God and each other. What God has brought us through has given us a mature perspective and developed a compassion for others who are hurting.

TAC loves God deeply and loves people, especially those in pain. But, perhaps most surprising about our church is our sense of humor. TAC services are lighthearted and fun. We love to laugh and every Sunday the wonderful buzz of joy-filled conversation hums through the building. One of the greatest blessings of my life has been being received into fellowship by this loving, joy-filled, and spiritually mature church.

What are you dreaming about for the future?

I’m looking forward to the new things God will teach me and allow me to experience in relationship with Him and with Trinity Alliance. I’m excited to be exposed to new sources of God’s love and provision as I settle into this new role, new church, new city, new state, and new Alliance district.

I’m hopeful that God will allow me and TAC to join him in serving and expressing his love to the lost and needy of Redding through intimate relationship. I pray that TAC would be a place where people can enjoy the love of God more fully and be inspired to express his love to others.

Please share with us a faith story about what God is doing.

For many years now, God has been prepping our congregation to follow him into new experiences with his love and new opportunities to join with him in loving this community. It seems this time of prepping is coming to a close and a fresh wind of his Spirit is blowing. There is a stirring in our soul that is bringing holy discontent, deeper longing for him and a new call to step out of our comfort zones. It’s too soon to know how this will play out, but our anticipation is building as we zero in our focus on Him. May God be glorified!

How can we pray for you?

Pray we’d all know and enjoy more fully the intimate love relationship we each have with God and draw others to do the same.

Pray for God to give us a clearer vision of who he is, who we are and who we are to love.

Pray for God to unite us around the cross and our common mission to love him and love others.

Pray that we would follow Jesus wherever he leads and be willing to take risky steps of faith.
