Letter from Terry Smith, VP of Church Ministries

January 13, 2020

Dear Central Pacific District Colleagues,

Greetings from the National Office! I’m writing to let you know that Rev. J. Wayne Spriggs has been appointed to serve as your district superintendent. His term will begin on March 1, 2020 and conclude on July 31, 2022. Wayne will not be eligible for election in 2022. I contacted three potential candidates for this role, two of which agreed to be interviewed by DEXCOM. Following the two interviews, DEXCOM selected Wayne.

Wayne has served as a pastor and district superintendent in The Alliance for 35 years, both in the U.S. and Canada. He served for 12 years as DS in the Eastern PA District and led the district in making substantial progress. He also served with distinction as the interim DS in the MidAmerica District. Most recently, Wayne has served as the pastor at Pine Glen Alliance Church in Lewistown, PA. For nearly two years, he has served as a consultant to your DS and DEXCOM. DEXCOM and I believe that he has the God-given wiring to serve the Central Pacific District well during this period of time. Wayne is married to Janet. They have two adult children and two grandchildren. Wayne will be present for part of Encounter and we will pray over him there as we commission him for this new role. Please pray for Wayne and Janet as they prepare for this next season in their ministry.

We will also take the opportunity during Encounter to express our love and appreciation to Ray and Donice Van Gilst. They have served faithfully in the Central Pacific District for many years and have made an invaluable contribution. I know you are praying for Ray and Donice as they absorb this unexpected change and determine what comes next for them as they continue serving the Lord.

I want to acknowledge that the Lord is powerfully at work in the Central Pacific District. I have been very encouraged by the Hispanic church planting that is happening. You have several strong and growing churches. Alliance missions is front and center. Your district is marked by a high level of cultural diversity. You’ve bounced back well from some major natural disasters. While there are issues to be addressed that DEXCOM and I believe called for a leadership transition, please know that I have great expectations for the future of the district. I’m deeply grateful that you are a part of our Alliance family.

I look forward to seeing you at Encounter.

Keep the faith!

Terry D. Smith
